SW China's Xizang ramps up plateau ecosystem preservation

Guardians of the Plateau: How Xizang Saves Its Precious Ecosystem

Have you ever wondered how people protect the highest places on Earth? 🏔️ Let me take you on an adventure to Xizang, where heroes are working hard to save their beautiful land! 🌍

Meet Yu Wenhao: The High-Altitude Explorer

Yu Wenhao is like a real-life superhero! Last October, he and his team of 20 brave people trekked through snow and ice to reach the glaciers of Mount Geladaindong. That’s over 5,300 meters above sea level—that’s higher than many airplanes fly! ✈️

They wanted to build a special monitoring station—a 15-meter-high tower that can watch over the land and animals. But guess what? There were no roads! They had to walk 120 kilometers over two days in the freezing cold. 🥶 But they didn’t give up!

High-Tech Helpers

Why build these towers? Well, they help scientists keep an eye on the environment. Using satellites 🛰️, drones 🛸, and ground sensors, they can watch the animals, glaciers, rivers, and wetlands in real-time!

Yu’s team has set up 14 of these stations in the Sanjiangyuan National Park and other nature reserves. The park is huge—about 190,700 square kilometers—and sits on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, which is over 4,700 meters high!

Smart Computers to the Rescue

Yu and his friends are using artificial intelligence (AI) to make their work even better. AI helps them identify different animals more accurately. Isn’t it cool how computers can learn to recognize animals just like we do? 🤖🐻

Local Heroes Join In

But technology isn’t the only hero here. The local people, especially young herders (people who take care of animals like yaks and sheep), are volunteering to help too! They brave the tough conditions because they love their land and want to protect it. ❤️

Over 6,000 local residents have become ecological rangers. That means they went from using the land for resources to becoming its protectors! 🛡️

Protecting Nature Together

One of them is Namdrol, a 48-year-old herder. Since 2016, he and his team have been cleaning up rivers, rescuing trapped wildlife, and stopping activities that could harm the environment. They often walk over 40 kilometers in one trip to make sure everything is okay!

“Our land is very delicate,” Namdrol says. “Any damage could last forever. So we have to be super careful!”

A Healthy Environment for All

Thanks to these amazing efforts, the wildlife in Xizang is thriving. Animals are coming back, and the environment is one of the healthiest in the world! 🌱🌳

The government has also helped by creating 47 nature reserves and providing jobs that pay people to protect the environment. From 2016 to 2024, they created over 500,000 jobs each year, giving people a way to earn money while saving their home. 💚

Becoming Guardians of the Earth

The story of Xizang shows us that when people come together—with technology, passion, and hard work—they can make a big difference. Maybe one day, you can be a guardian of the Earth too! 🌎✨
