Guess what happened at Wimbledon? Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, who’s just 22 years old, had a super tough match against Italy’s Fabio Fognini, who’s 38!
It was a real rollercoaster! 🎢 They played for four hours and 37 minutes under the hot sun, and the match went all the way to five sets. In the end, Alcaraz won 7-5, 6-7(5), 7-5, 2-6, 6-1. What a battle!
Alcaraz said, “I knew at the beginning that it was going to be really difficult playing against Fabio. The talent that Fabio has is immense. In every match he can show his best tennis. I think today he has shown some of his best tennis.”
Next up, Alcaraz will play against British wildcard Oliver Tarvet in the second round. Let’s cheer him on! 🙌
But that’s not all! There were some surprises on the first day. Eighth seed Holger Rune from Denmark and ninth seed Daniil Medvedev from Russia were both knocked out in the first round! 😮
And in another match, American player Taylor Fritz was in the middle of an exciting comeback when the match was stopped because it was too late. The spectators who stayed late hoped to see the end, but they’ll have to wait until tomorrow!
