Hey everyone, we have some very sad news from South Korea. 😢
On Sunday, a plane carrying 181 people crashed while trying to land at Muan International Airport, which is about 290 kilometers southwest of Seoul, the capital city.
Sadly, 179 people lost their lives in this terrible accident. Only two crew members were rescued from the very back of the plane.
The airplane was Jeju Air flight 7C2216, coming from Bangkok, Thailand. It had 175 passengers on board, including 173 people from South Korea and two from Thailand, along with six crew members.
The accident happened around 9:03 a.m. local time. When the plane was trying to land, its wheels didn’t work properly. This means the landing gear, which is the part of the plane with the wheels, failed.
The pilots tried to land without the wheels, which is called a “belly landing.” Unfortunately, the plane skidded off the runway and crashed into a wall. The plane broke into two pieces and caught fire. 😔
Authorities think that a bird might have hit the plane and caused the landing gear to fail. This is sometimes called a “bird strike.”
Emergency teams worked hard to rescue people, but most of the plane was badly damaged by the fire.
South Korea’s acting President, Choi Sang-mok, announced a week of national mourning to remember those who lost their lives. The government is also helping the families and investigating what exactly caused the crash.
This is the worst air disaster in South Korea since 1993. It’s a very sad time, and our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragedy. ❤️
