China’s Wang Yi Explains South China Sea Dispute at ASEAN Meeting π
Hey there! Have you ever heard about the South China Sea? It’s a big area of the ocean where many countries, including China and the Philippines, have interests.
Recently, China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, spoke at a meeting with other countries in Southeast Asia, called the ASEAN Plus foreign ministers’ meetings.
He explained why China thinks an arbitration case about the South China Sea was unfair. The Philippines had started this case, but according to Wang Yi, they didn’t follow the rules.
He said that the countries involved should talk directly with each other to solve any problems, just like friends do when they have a disagreement.
Wang Yi pointed out that the arbitration tried to decide things that it shouldn’t, like who owns certain islands. He mentioned “Taiping Island,” which is the biggest feature in the Nansha Islands (also known as the Spratly Islands). The arbitration said it was just a rock, but Wang Yi disagreed.
He also said that some countries outside the region were trying to cause trouble, but that China and its neighbors are working together to keep the South China Sea peaceful. They’re even creating a Code of Conduct to help everyone get along better!
So, the main message is that China wants to solve any issues by talking directly with the other countries involved and keep the South China Sea a place of peace and cooperation. ππ€
