Who Did This?
A company from Israel named Paragon Solutions made spyware called Graphite. This spyware was used to target the phones of at least three important journalists in Europe. Two of them work at an investigative news site in Italy.
Why Is This a Big Deal?
In countries where people are free to say what they think, like many in Europe, it’s really important that journalists can do their jobs without being watched or stopped. Using spyware to spy on them is not okay!
What Are People Saying? 🗣️
The European Union said that spying on citizens, including journalists and people who might disagree with the government, is unacceptable if it’s true. The leader of Italy, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, didn’t say anything about it, but someone from her team said they always follow the law.

John Scott-Railton, a researcher from Citizen Lab, said that companies making spyware need to be careful because their products can be misused. Even though spyware might be made to catch bad guys, it can also be used to spy on innocent people.
