Heroes of the Sea: How Chinese Fishermen Saved British Soldiers in WWII

Hey there! 😊 Have you ever heard of a ship called the Lisbon Maru? It’s a story of bravery and friendship that started over 80 years ago during World War II. Let me tell you all about it!

On May 20th, a special ceremony was held on an island off the coast of Zhejiang Province in the Chinese mainland. People gathered to unveil a new memorial called the Memorial for Dongji Fishermen’s Rescue of British Prisoners of War.

Back in October 1942, during World War II, a ship named the Lisbon Maru was carrying British soldiers who were prisoners of war. Unfortunately, the ship sank. But guess what happened next?

Local fishermen from the Dongji Islands saw what was happening. They bravely sailed out into the dangerous waters to help! 🌊🚣‍♂️ They rescued many of the British soldiers, saving their lives.

At the ceremony, 18 descendants of those British soldiers visited to honor the fishermen’s heroic actions. The new memorial is a reminder of the strong friendship between the Chinese and British people that began all those years ago.

This amazing story shows us how kindness and bravery can make a huge difference. Even during tough times like war, people can come together to help each other. Isn’t that inspiring? ❤️

So, the next time you hear about World War II, remember the brave fishermen who became heroes by saving lives and starting a lasting friendship between two countries.
