π Early this morning, at 4:31 a.m. Beijing Time, a magnitude-5.0 earthquake shook Eryuan County in the Bai Autonomous Prefecture of Dali, located in southwest China’s Yunnan Province.
The earthquake was quite strong and was felt in nearby areas like Eryuan County, Dali City, and Heqing County. It was so powerful that it woke up many residents! π€
The epicenter, which is the spot on the Earth’s surface right above where the earthquake started, was located at 26.26 degrees north latitude and 100.03 degrees east longitude. The quake happened about 10 kilometers underground, which is considered shallow and can make the shaking feel stronger on the surface.
Local authorities quickly sprang into action! π They started emergency responses and are checking to see if anyone was hurt and assessing any damage that might have happened.
Earthquakes happen when there is sudden movement in the Earth’s crust. This movement releases energy that makes the ground shake. Scientists use a scale called the Richter scale to measure how strong an earthquake is. A magnitude-5.0 earthquake is considered moderate and can cause damage to buildings and other structures.
We hope everyone stays safe! β€οΈ Remember, if you ever experience an earthquake, drop, cover, and hold on!
