China Wraps ‘Sea of Death’ Desert in Green Belt!
Hey everyone! 🌟 Guess what? China has done something amazing! They have surrounded their biggest desert, the Taklimakan Desert, with a huge green belt of trees and plants! 🌳🌵
The Taklimakan Desert is known as the “Sea of Death” because it’s so big and dangerous to cross. It’s the largest desert in China and the second-largest shifting sand desert in the world! 🏜️ It covers an area bigger than Germany!
For over 40 years, people in China have been working hard to plant trees and plants around this desert. Now, they have completed a green belt that goes all the way around the desert, stretching an incredible 3,046 kilometers! That’s like going from New York to Los Angeles! 😲
Why did they do this? Well, deserts can spread and take over land where people live and farm. By planting trees and plants, they can stop the sand from spreading and protect the towns and farms nearby. 🌾🏘️
They planted special desert plants like desert poplar, saxaul, and red willow that can survive in the hot and dry conditions. These plants help keep the sand in place and even improve the soil over time. 🌱
This project is part of a bigger plan called the Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program, which is also known as the “Green Great Wall.” It’s the world’s largest tree-planting project! 🎋 The goal is to plant trees across northern China to stop deserts from growing.
Since 1978, China has planted trees covering an area of over 32 million hectares! That’s like covering the entire country of Italy with trees! 🌲🌲🌲
This green belt around the Taklimakan Desert not only helps the environment but also helps people. It protects farmland, improves air quality, and even creates jobs for local people who take care of the plants and manage new crops like cistanche, a plant used in medicine. 👨🌾
