Zhou Qunfei: From Watch Glasses to Smartphone Screens 📱
Zhou Qunfei was born in a small village in Hunan province. She grew up with very little money. At just 16 years old, she left school to work in a factory in the big city of Shenzhen. Even though she had long work days, she took night classes to learn more skills like accounting and computers.
In 1993, Zhou used her savings to start a tiny workshop in a three-bedroom apartment! She and her team began making glass for watches. But when mobile phones started becoming popular, she had a brilliant idea 💡: What if she could make glass screens for phones?
After lots of experimenting and hard work, Zhou’s company, which became Lens Technology, made super-strong glass that was perfect for touchscreens. Her glass was so good that big companies like Apple used it for their iPhones!
Now, Zhou’s company is one of the biggest in the world for smartphone screens, and she is one of the most successful businesswomen. Isn’t that inspiring?
Zhong Sheng: Fixing Machines and Connecting the World 🌐
Meanwhile, up north in Wuhan, Zhong Sheng started working at a company called Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable (YOFC) in 1993. At first, he was just fixing machines. But many of the machines were from other countries, and they were complicated!
One day, a very important machine broke down. Without it, the company would lose a lot of money. Zhong worked nonstop for 48 hours (that’s two whole days!) and fixed it all by himself! 🛠️
He realized that they shouldn’t have to rely on machines from other countries. So, he decided to create their own system. Even though it was hard and he faced many challenges, Zhong and his team made China’s first optical cable control software!
Because of Zhong’s hard work, YOFC became the world’s top producer of optical fibers, which help connect the internet around the globe!
