U.S. DOJ drops police reform settlements over Floyd, Taylor killings

U.S. Justice Department Changes Plans for Police Reforms: Here’s What That Means

Recently, the U.S. Department of Justice (that’s like the country’s big law helper!) decided to change some plans about improving police departments. Let’s find out what this means.

Back in 2020, two very sad events happened. George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, both African American, died during police actions. This made many people around the world upset and wanting change. 🕊️

The Department of Justice (we can call it DOJ for short) looked into some police departments and found that they were not always treating people fairly, especially Black people. They wanted to make official agreements with these police departments to help fix the problems.

But now, the DOJ says they are not going to make these agreements anymore. Instead, they are stopping some investigations into police departments in cities like Minneapolis and Louisville, and others.

Some people are wondering what this means for making things better between the police and communities. It’s important because everyone wants to feel safe and be treated fairly. 🤝

Harmeet Dhillon, who works at the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division, said that having too many rules takes control away from local communities and gives it to people who don’t live there. She thinks that’s not a good idea.

It can be confusing, but it’s important to keep talking about how to make sure everyone is treated fairly and with respect. Maybe you can talk with your friends or family about what fairness means to you! ❤️
