Recently, a U.S. Senator named Gary Peters discovered something surprising! He found out that it costs around $100,000 per day to keep each migrant there! 😱 That’s a lot of money! To give you an idea, normal detention centers in the U.S. cost about $165 per day for each person.
Senator Peters thinks this is way too much and is worried about wasting taxpayer money. 📨 He asked the Homeland Security Secretary, Kristi Noem, why it costs so much. But she didn’t know the answer. 🤷♀️
On top of that, sometimes the migrants are sent back to the U.S. after staying at Guantanamo Bay, which costs even more money for travel! ✈️
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), a group that fights for people’s rights, is also concerned. They filed a lawsuit because they believe the conditions for migrants at Guantanamo Bay aren’t good. They say some migrants are kept in rooms without windows for almost the whole day and can’t talk to their families. 😔
Another Senator, Rand Paul, is also asking questions. He wonders why so much money is being spent on things like building more walls at the U.S.-Mexico border when fewer people are trying to cross illegally. He agrees that security is important but thinks spending should be reasonable. 💡
