What’s So Special About This Bacteria?
This bacteria isn’t your everyday germ. Scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shanghai Jiao Tong University used synthetic biology (that’s a fancy way of saying they designed it in a lab) to make a bacteria that can break down five different kinds of harmful chemicals found in dirty water from factories.
Why Is This Important?
Factories sometimes release wastewater (that’s used water) that has bad stuff in it like oil, heavy metals, and other yucky chemicals. Normal bacteria can only clean up one or two types of these pollutants, but this new bacteria can handle five at the same time! How Well Does It Work?
In just two days, this amazing bacteria removed over 60% of all the bad chemicals in the water. It even removed almost 90% of some really tough pollutants! That means cleaner water and a healthier environment for all of us.
