UN chief says two-state solution near a point of no return

UN Chief Urges Action: Two-State Solution for Peace is Running Out of Time!

Hey everyone! Have you heard about what’s happening between Israel and Palestine? On Tuesday, the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. Antonio Guterres, spoke about something really important. He said that the chance for peace between these two places is “near a point of no return.” Yikes!

So, what’s going on? Well, Mr. Guterres is talking about something called the “two-state solution.” This means having two separate countries, Israel and Palestine, living next to each other peacefully, with Jerusalem as their shared capital city. Sounds like a good idea, right?

But lately, things have been getting worse. Since some terrible attacks on October 7, 2023, by a group called Hamas, there has been a lot of conflict and fighting. There’s been trouble in places like Gaza and the West Bank, and many people are getting hurt. Mr. Guterres is worried that if we don’t act soon, the hope for peace might disappear! 😢

He is urging leaders around the world to make some choices. They can stay silent, they can ignore the problem, or they can do something to help. Mr. Guterres wants them to choose to help!

He also talked about how important it is to let humanitarian aid (that’s help like food, water, and medicine) reach the people who need it. This includes support from groups like the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Everyone deserves to have their basic needs met!

Mr. Guterres said, “We need the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. And we need a permanent ceasefire.” That means he wants all the people who have been captured to be set free and for the fighting to stop for good.

He reminded countries that it’s important to follow international laws that protect human rights. He said Israel, as the occupying power, has to make sure people have food and medicine. He also said that humanitarian workers should be safe when they are helping others.

The big message? The world needs to work together to bring peace to this region. There’s a special conference happening next June, co-hosted by France and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, to talk about how to support the two-state solution. Mr. Guterres is encouraging leaders to think of real actions they can take to make peace happen.

He ended by saying, “Show the political courage and exercise the political will to make good on this central question for peace for Palestinians, Israelis, the region, and humanity.”

Let’s hope that leaders around the world listen and take steps to bring peace! ✌️
