Guess what? 🏃♂️🤖 Robots are getting ready to run their very first half-marathon in Beijing this Sunday! Yes, you heard that right! It’s the world’s first humanoid robot half-marathon!
This amazing race is part of the Beijing E-town half-marathon and is a big step forward for robots and artificial intelligence. The robots will run (or maybe waddle!) for a full 21 kilometers, which is about 13 miles. That’s a lot of steps!
These special robots have two legs just like us, and they’ll need to make about 250,000 perfect joint movements to finish the race. That’s like moving every single joint in your body over and over again for hours!
But there’s a twist! Most of the robots will need to have their batteries changed or even be swapped out entirely during the race. If they don’t change batteries at the supply stations, they’ll get a time penalty. And if they replace the whole robot, they’ll get an even bigger penalty!
Wang Guolin, the deputy head of the robot group for the race, says that the winner isn’t just the first robot to cross the finish line. The final score will subtract any penalty time from how long it took them to finish. So, a robot that follows all the rules might beat a faster robot that got penalties!
The medals for the competition were shown for the first time on Wednesday. Any robot that finishes the race in under three and a half hours will get a medal. How cool is that?
This race shows how far robots have come and how they might be able to help us in the future. Maybe one day, you’ll be running alongside a robot in your own marathon!
