Hey space fans! ๐ Guess what happened high above Earth? Two NASA astronauts, Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, who have been stuck on the International Space Station (ISS) for nearly eight months, took an exciting spacewalk together!
They went outside the ISS to fix a broken antenna and to check the station’s exterior for any tiny microbes that might have hitched a ride from Earth. Isn’t that cool?
It wasn’t easy, though! They had some trouble unbolting the stubborn antenna. But after nearly four hours outside, they finally managed to remove it. Mission Control reminded them to watch out for any floating bits that might come loose.
While they were working, 420 kilometers above our planet, Suni Williams set an amazing new record! She now holds the record for the most time spent spacewalking by a female astronaut. How inspiring! ๐
Did you know that they were only supposed to stay on the ISS for a week? But their spaceship, Boeing’s brand-new Starliner capsule, had so many problems that NASA had to send it back to Earth without them! ๐ฎ
Now, they’re waiting for SpaceX to bring them home, which might not happen until late March or early April. That means they’ll have been in space for 10 months! Talk about an unexpected adventure!
Suni Williams had already done a spacewalk two weeks ago with another astronaut. This was Butch Wilmore’s first spacewalk during this mission, but both of them have done spacewalks before on other trips.
With nine spacewalks under her belt, Suni Williams has spent more time spacewalking than any other woman astronaut. She broke the record previously held by retired astronaut Peggy Whitson, who spent 60 hours and 21 minutes on spacewalks over 10 missions. Way to go, Suni! ๐
These astronauts are real-life heroes, showing us what bravery and teamwork look like. Who knows? Maybe one day, you’ll be the one floating above Earth, fixing antennas, and setting new records!
