🕊️ The United Nations is very worried about what’s happening in the city of Goma in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Recently, fighting has gotten worse, and it’s causing big problems for the people who live there. Heavy weapons, like artillery shells, have hit the city center. This means places like hospitals and even a site where refugees stay have been struck. 😢
Bruno Lemarquis, a UN official, shared that a maternity hospital was hit. This is a hospital where babies are born. Sadly, some newborn babies and pregnant women were hurt or killed. Another place called Save the Children, which helps kids, was also struck.
The hospitals that are still standing are full of people who are hurt. Doctors and nurses are doing all they can, but it’s very hard. Many people are trying to leave the city because they are scared. Hundreds of thousands are on the move, looking for safety. 🏃♂️🏃♀️
The UN had to move some of its workers to safer places. Only the most essential helpers are still in Goma. They report that things like water and electricity are not working well. The internet is down, and phones only work sometimes. This makes it even harder for people to get help.
Jean-Pierre Lacroix, who works with UN peacekeepers, said that the situation is very dangerous. Some UN peacekeepers have been hurt or even lost their lives while trying to help. He worries that if things don’t get better, there could be a big humanitarian disaster. 🌍
