Why Can’t Lebanese Families Go Back Home Yet? π§
Thousands of people in Lebanon are still waiting to return to their homes near the border with Israel. But the Israeli army has told them to stay away until further notice. What’s going on?
A Promise to Go Back Home π
After conflicts last year between Israel and a group called Hezbollah, a ceasefire (which means stopping fighting) was agreed upon. This deal said that both Israeli and Hezbollah forces would leave the southern part of Lebanon within 60 days. That meant people who had to leave their homes could finally return!
But Now, A Delay… β³
Just before the deadline, Israel announced that its soldiers would stay in south Lebanon a bit longer. They didn’t say how long. They told Lebanese people living in villages near the border not to go back yet. They even shared a map showing areas where people shouldn’t return, warning them it could be dangerous.
Why Can’t They Return? π€
Israel says that the ceasefire terms haven’t been fully followed by the Lebanese side. On the other hand, the Lebanese army says that Israel is “procrastinating” (which means delaying) in leaving the area, making it hard for Lebanese soldiers to take their place and keep the area safe.
What Are Leaders Saying? π£οΈ
The President of Lebanon, Joseph Aoun, is asking France to help convince Israel to follow the agreement. In a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron, he complained about Israel’s actions, like destroying villages and blocking roads, which make it hard for people to return home.
People are Waiting π
Imagine not being able to go back to your house after a long time! Members of the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, called UNIFIL, have seen Israeli tanks and bulldozers setting up roadblocks. This stops Lebanese families from returning to their villages.
What’s Next? π
Everyone hopes that both sides can agree and let people go back home safely. The Lebanese army says they’re ready to move in as soon as Israel leaves. Other countries, like France, are trying to help keep the peace.
Why Is This Important? π
It’s important for families to feel safe and to live in their own homes. Conflicts can make life very hard for people, especially kids like you. Understanding what’s happening in other parts of the world helps us be more caring and informed global citizens.
