Ancient Snake Symbols Inspire New Mascot for Chinese New Year!
Hey there! Did you know that the Chinese New Year is just around the corner? On January 29, 2025, people all over the world will celebrate the Year of the Snake! π
This year, something really cool is happening. China Media Group (CMG) has introduced a new mascot named Si Shengsheng for their annual Spring Festival Gala, a show that’s been airing on Chinese New Year’s Eve for over 40 years!
But what’s so special about Si Shengsheng? Well, his design is inspired by an ancient Chinese character called “Si” from the oracle bone script. This script is one of the earliest forms of Chinese writing, and it was discovered carved on animal bones like oxen or turtle shells in Anyang, Henan Province.
Thousands of years ago, during the Shang Dynasty, these bones were used by the royal court for divination, which means telling the future or seeking guidance. The characters they carved are the ancestors of Chinese writing today!
By bringing back the “Si” character, Si Shengsheng connects the past with the present, showing how ancient culture can inspire modern design. Isn’t that awesome?
So, when you’re celebrating the Year of the Snake, remember the story of Si Shengsheng and the oracle bone script. It’s a reminder that history can be really cool and still influence us today!
Happy Year of the Snake! ππ
