Hey there! Did you hear what’s happening between Canada and the United States? 🇨🇦🤔 Well, let’s break it down!
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with all the provincial and territorial leaders this week. They had a big chat about some possible new taxes, called tariffs, that the next U.S. President, Donald Trump, is thinking about putting on Canadian goods. 😮
What’s a tariff? It’s like an extra fee that countries charge on products coming in from other places. So if Canada wants to sell maple syrup 🍁 or hockey sticks 🏒 to the U.S., and there’s a tariff, it would cost more money for Americans to buy them.
The leaders all agreed that they need to work together to make sure Canada doesn’t get hurt by these tariffs. They said, “No province should have to deal with this all alone!” 🤝
But there was one province, Alberta, that didn’t sign the joint statement. Alberta’s leader, Danielle Smith, is worried that if Canada stops sending oil to the U.S. as a way to fight back, it could cause big problems at home. She thinks it might even lead to a “national unity crisis.” 😬
Even so, all the leaders promised to keep working together. They want to make sure that if these tariffs do happen, they can help businesses and workers who might be affected. They might even use some of the money from any tariffs to help out! 💪
They’re planning to meet every week after Donald Trump becomes President on January 20th. Wow, that’s a lot of meetings! 🗓️
Prime Minister Trudeau is taking this very seriously. He even planned a big meeting with his team on the day Trump becomes President to focus on how to protect Canada’s interests. Go team! 🇨🇦❤️
So why is this important? Well, the U.S. is Canada’s biggest trading partner. That means we sell a lot of things to each other. Keeping that friendship strong is super important for jobs and businesses in Canada.
Let’s hope they can work it out! 🤞
