Mike Johnson, who is from Louisiana, was trying to become the Speaker again. The Speaker is kind of like the leader of the House—they help organize meetings and decide what topics to discuss.
At first, not everyone in his party, the Republicans, agreed. Three Republicans voted against him! 😮 But after some serious discussions and negotiations, two of them changed their minds. In the end, Mike won the vote with 218 to 216 votes. That’s really close!
One Republican, Thomas Massie from Kentucky, still didn’t vote for Mike. He thinks that if Mike stays as Speaker, it might not be good for the Republicans in the future. There’s some disagreement in the party right now, which can make things a bit tricky.
Earlier this month, the previous Speaker, Kevin McCarthy, was removed from his position after some disagreements within his party. That meant the House didn’t have a leader for a few weeks, which made it hard to get things done.
