New Detention Center Called “Alligator Alcatraz” Opens in Florida
Hey there! Did you hear about the new detention center that just opened in the Florida Everglades? It’s called “Alligator Alcatraz” 🐊🏝️! Sounds wild, right?
The first group of people arrived there recently. They’re immigrants who were found living in the United States without permission. The U.S. government is working to send them back to their home countries.
An official named Tricia McLaughlin from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said, “Detainees began arriving last night.” She mentioned that they are working very quickly to build places to hold these people before they are sent back.
Can you imagine? This place was built in just eight days! It has over 200 security cameras, lots of barbed wire, and 400 security guards. When it’s fully ready, it can hold about 3,000 people, according to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
But not everyone is happy about this new center. Environmental groups are worried that building it so quickly might have hurt the Everglades, which is a super important and beautiful natural area full of amazing wildlife 🌿🐦.
Human rights groups and Native American tribes are also upset. They say the center is in a place that is very special to them, and they’re concerned about the people who have to stay there, especially because of the hot weather and mosquitos 🦟🔥.
What do you think about this situation? It’s important to think about how we treat people and our environment!
