π Hey everyone! Exciting news from the world of sports! Kirsty Coventry from Zimbabwe is now the new President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC)! She’s the first woman and the first African to lead the IOC in its 130-year history! ππ
Born in Harare in 1983, Kirsty was an amazing swimmer. She won gold medals in the 200-meter backstroke at the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Olympics. That’s two gold medals! π₯π₯ She actually has seven Olympic medals from five different Games. How awesome is that?
After she retired from swimming in 2016, Kirsty didn’t stop making waves. She became Zimbabwe’s Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture in 2019. She also joined the IOC Athletes’ Commission in 2012 and helped plan the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games and the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games. π
She takes over from Thomas Bach, a former Olympic fencing champion from Germany, who was the IOC President from 2013 to 2025. Now, Kirsty is ready to lead and inspire athletes all over the world! π
This is a huge moment for girls and boys everywhere. It shows that with hard work and passion, you can achieve anything you dream of! Maybe someday, you could be an Olympic champion or even the IOC President too! Dare to dream big! πͺπ
