Cambodia and Thailand Disagree Over Ancient Temples ๐ฏ
Hi everyone! Did you know that sometimes countries argue over land? That’s what’s happening between Cambodia and Thailand right now.
What’s Going On?
Cambodia and Thailand are neighbors in Southeast Asia. They share a long border that’s about 820 kilometers long. But some parts of this border aren’t clearly marked, and that’s causing some problems.
The Ancient Temples
Along the border, there are ancient temples that are hundreds of years old! These temples are called Mom Bei, Ta Moan Thom Temple, Ta Moan Tauch Temple, and Ta Krabei Temple. Both Cambodia and Thailand say these temples belong to them.
Why Are They Arguing?
On May 28, there was a small fight between soldiers from both countries, and sadly, a Cambodian soldier died. Now, both countries have sent more soldiers to the border because they are worried about more clashes.
What Is Cambodia Doing?
Cambodia’s Prime Minister, Hun Manet, said that Cambodia will ask the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to decide who these temples belong to. The ICJ is like a world court that helps countries solve disputes peacefully.
What Is Thailand Saying?
Thailand’s Prime Minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, wants to solve the problem by talking directly with Cambodia, without going to the world court. She posted on Facebook that Thailand hopes to find a peaceful solution.
Can They Solve It?
Officials from both countries met on Saturday to try to ease tensions. They had a meeting in Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital city. But it’s not clear if they reached any agreement.
Why Is This Important?
It’s important for countries to solve their disagreements peacefully so that people can stay safe and happy. Hopefully, Cambodia and Thailand can find a way to agree!
