What Happened?
In the city of Samarinda, the capital of East Kalimantan province in Indonesia, heavy rains caused big landslides on Monday. π§οΈβ°οΈ Unfortunately, four people lost their lives when the landslides hit their houses.
What Is a Landslide?
A landslide happens when a large amount of earth, rocks, or mud slides down a hill or mountain. This can occur when the ground becomes too wet from lots of rain, making it unstable. It’s like when you build a sandcastle that’s too tall, and it collapses because the sand can’t hold together! π°β‘οΈπ
Why Do Landslides Happen?
Heavy rain can soak into the soil, making it heavy and slippery. If there aren’t enough trees or plants to hold the soil together with their roots, the ground can slide down. In some places, people might cut down trees, which can make landslides more likely. π³β
Rescue Efforts
Rescuers found two of the four people by Monday afternoon, but they are still looking for the other two. The rescue team is working hard to find them and help anyone else who might be affected. π§βππ
Staying Safe
It’s important to be careful during heavy rains, especially if you live near hills or mountains. Always listen to local warnings and stay away from steep slopes when the ground is wet. Safety first! βοΈ
Helping Out
Communities often come together to help each other during disasters. People may donate food, clothes, or help rebuild homes. Even small acts of kindness can make a big difference! π€β€οΈ
What Can We Do?
Planting trees can help prevent landslides by holding the soil together with their roots. Protecting the environment is everyone’s job! Maybe you can plant a tree in your community too. π²π
Remember
Natural disasters can happen anywhere, but by learning about them, we can help keep ourselves and others safe. Stay informed and take care! π
