Japanese Prime Minister Wants to Remove All Tariffs Between Japan and the US! ๐ฏ๐ต๐ค๐บ๐ธ
Have you ever wondered why some things cost more in one country than another? It might be because of something called a “tariff.” ๐ฆ๐ฐ
A tariff is like a tax that countries put on things they buy from each other. For example, when Japan sells cars to the United States, the US adds a fee to make those cars more expensive. This can make it harder for people to buy them.
On Sunday, Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said he wants to get rid of all these tariffs between Japan and the US! That means he wants no extra taxes on things they trade. This could make things like cars cheaper for everyone! ๐
He spoke on a TV show and said that discussions with the US are going well. He thinks Japan’s relationship with US President Donald Trump is better than people might think.
Recently, the US made a deal with the UK (Britain) that reduces some tariffs but still keeps a 10% fee on some goods. Prime Minister Ishiba said that’s a start, but he wants to aim for 0% tariffs.
He also mentioned that high taxes on cars make them more expensive for people in the US. “Shouldn’t those tariffs be lowered for the sake of the American economy too?” he asked.
Currently, Japan has to pay a big tax (25%!) when they sell cars to the US. That’s a lot! If these tariffs are gone, it could help both countries.
But Ishiba also said that Japan needs to think carefully about other taxes at home, like the consumption tax (that’s like sales tax). He wondered, “If we suddenly lower the consumption tax, what happens to the country’s money?“
He believes they should find other ways to help people who need it most.
What do you think? Would it be cool if things from other countries cost less? ๐๐ก
