Hey tennis fans! Have you heard the big news? ๐จ๐ฆ Canada’s own Gabriel Diallo pulled off an incredible upset at the Madrid Open! He defeated Grigor Dimitrov from Bulgaria to reach his very first ATP Masters quarterfinal! ๐
Dimitrov, who was one of the tournament favorites, won the first set 7-5. But Diallo didn’t give up! ๐ช Just like he did in a previous match against Zhang Zhizhen of China, he saved not one, not two, but three match points! ๐ฎ
In an exciting tiebreaker, Diallo served an ace to win the second set 7-6 (9-7). The crowd went wild! ๐ Then, in the final set, he kept his cool and won 6-4 when Dimitrov hit the ball wide. Game, set, match! ๐
This victory means Diallo, who is just 23 years old, will jump up 25 spots to reach a career-high ranking of World No. 53! ๐ And guess what? If he beats Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti in the next round, he could climb even higher!
Speaking of Musetti, he’s been doing great too. ๐พ He secured his place in the Top 10 players in the world for the first time after beating Australia’s Alex de Minaur. Musetti, also 23, won the match with scores of 6-4 and 6-2.
Isn’t it exciting to see these young players making big moves on the tennis court? Who are you cheering for? Let us know! ๐
