Hey there! Did you know that since 2014, more than 72,000 people have died or gone missing while trying to move from one country to another? π This sad news comes from the United Nations (UN), and it shows just how dangerous it can be for people who are looking for safety and new opportunities.
Why Are People Leaving Their Homes?
Many people around the world live in places where there is war, disaster, or other big problems. Imagine having to leave your home because it’s not safe anymore. These people, called migrants, often feel they have no choice but to go somewhere else.
The Risks They Face
The journey to a new place can be very dangerous. In 2022 alone, nearly 9,000 people died while traveling migration routes. That’s the highest number recorded in a single year! π’
The Mediterranean Sea, especially the Central Mediterranean route, is one of the most dangerous paths. Over the past 10 years, nearly 25,000 people have been lost at sea there. Many leave from countries like Libya, hoping to reach Europe, but some never make it.
Stories from Around the World
- Thousands of people from Afghanistan have died trying to find safety, especially since 2021.
- Over 3,100 Rohingya people from Myanmar have lost their lives, many in shipwrecks or crossing into neighboring countries.
What Can Be Done?
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is calling for safer ways for people to move. Amy Pope, the head of the IOM, says we need to help people so they don’t have to risk their lives. She suggests creating more opportunities in their home countries and safer ways to migrate when they need to.
Julia Black, who works with the IOM’s Missing Migrants Project, warns that the real number of people who have died might be even higher because not all cases are reported.
Why Does This Matter?
It’s important for us to know about these challenges so we can understand what’s happening in the world. Maybe someday, we can help make a difference! πͺ
