Over 400 people have been saved from under piles of rubble after a big earthquake hit Myanmar last Friday! 🌏
The city of Mandalay, which is Myanmar’s second-largest city and home to more than 1.7 million people, was hit hard. Many buildings collapsed into heaps of broken bricks and stones.
Brave rescue teams from Myanmar and other countries have been working all day and night to find and help people trapped in the rubble. As of Monday, they have rescued 403 people! That’s like saving all the kids in a big school! 🏫🎉
Sadly, 259 people have lost their lives in Mandalay, and many more are still missing. The earthquake was really strong—it measured 7.9 on the Richter scale, which is how scientists measure how powerful earthquakes are.
The quake has affected the whole country, with 2,719 people passing away, 4,521 people injured, and 441 still missing across Myanmar. Even in neighboring Thailand, at least 19 people lost their lives because of the earthquake.
Rescue teams are continuing their important work, but many roads and phone lines are broken, making it hard to reach some towns and villages.
Many people are still afraid to go back inside buildings because of aftershocks, which are smaller earthquakes that happen after the big one. They are sleeping outside in parks and open spaces, even in hospital parking lots! 🏥😔
An organization called the International Rescue Committee (IRC) says people urgently need tents, medical care, clean water, and food.
The Myanmar government has asked everyone to pause at exactly 12:51:02 PM on Tuesday to remember those affected by the earthquake. They have also declared a week-long period of mourning.
Let’s keep the people of Myanmar in our thoughts and hope they stay safe! 💕
