Hi everyone! ๐ Have you heard about the big wildfires happening in South Korea? ๐ฐ๐ท It’s a tough time there right now, and we want to tell you what’s going on.
What’s Happening?
Since last Friday, strong and fast-moving wildfires have been raging through the southern parts of South Korea. Sadly, at least 24 people have lost their lives, and many of them were grandparents in their 60s and 70s. Over 27,000 people had to leave their homes to stay safe!
Where Are the Fires?
The fires started in a place called Sancheong County and spread to nearby areas like Uiseong, Andong, and even Cheongsong. Powerful winds and dry weather made the fires spread quickly, burning more than 200 buildings.
Heroes at Work ๐งโ๐
Brave firefighters, soldiers, and helpersโover 4,600 of themโare working hard to stop the fires. They’re using around 130 helicopters ๐ to drop water on the flames. But strong winds are making their job really tough.
Special Places in Danger
One of the fires reached a very old temple called Gounsa, which was built all the way back in the 7th century! Some of its precious buildings were burned, which makes many people sad because they are important parts of history.
People Staying Safe
Because of the fires, people in nearby villages had to leave their homes to go to safe places like indoor gymnasiums. Hikers on Jirisan Mountain, one of South Korea’s biggest national parks, were told to come down to avoid danger.
How Did the Fires Start?
Officials think that some of the fires might have started by accident. Maybe someone was using fire to clear grass, or sparks from tools like welding machines caused the dry grass to catch fire.
What Happens Next?
Everyone is hoping for a little rain to help put out the fires. Even a small amount could make a big difference! People are working together to stay safe and help each other during this hard time.
What Can We Learn?
Wildfires can happen when it’s dry and windy. It’s important to be careful with fire, especially outside. Always listen to instructions from adults and firefighters to stay safe!
Let’s keep the people of South Korea in our thoughts and hope these fires are put out soon! ๐
