Why Is the Associated Press Arguing with the White House?

Recently, the AP got into a disagreement with the White House, where the President of the United States works. 🏛️
Here’s what happened: President Donald Trump signed a piece of paper called an executive order. It said that people should start calling the “Gulf of Mexico” the “Gulf of America” instead. 🌊🇺🇸
The AP decided to keep calling it the “Gulf of Mexico,” because that’s what it’s been called for a very long time. This made the White House unhappy. 😠
Because of this, the White House stopped letting AP reporters go to some special places like the Oval Office (that’s the President’s office) and Air Force One (the President’s airplane). ✈️🚫
The AP thought this wasn’t fair. They believe that in America, the press (that’s people who report the news) should be able to say what they think is right without being punished. 📰🤔
So, the AP went to court and asked a judge to make the White House let them back in right away. But the judge said no, at least for now. ⚖️
The judge said that being allowed into certain places in the White House is a privilege (like a special permission), not a right. But he also said that it seemed like the White House might be treating the AP differently because of what they wrote. 🤷
The AP isn’t giving up! They will keep fighting for what they believe is fair. And many other news organizations support them too. ✊
