Hey there, young explorers! π Have you ever wondered how we stay connected across the world? Well, there are special underwater cables that help send internet data between countries! π‘
Recently, something mysterious happened in the Baltic Sea, near Sweden and Latvia. A big ship has been seized because it’s suspected of damaging one of these important underwater fiber optic cables! π²
Early on Sunday, the Latvian State Radio and Television Center (that’s a company that handles internet connections) noticed that their cable wasn’t working properly. They think it might have been seriously damaged by something hitting or dragging it. And guess what? The damaged part is in Sweden’s area of the sea.
Sweden’s authorities have started a criminal investigation into what might be a serious sabotage (that’s a big word meaning someone might have damaged something on purpose). They haven’t told us the ship’s name or where it’s from yet.
But some newspapers say it’s an oil tanker called Vezhen, registered in Malta, and it was sailing from Russia. Right now, the ship is anchored near a place called Karlskrona in Sweden.
The Latvian Prime Minister, Evika Silina, had an emergency meeting and said they’re working with NATO (that’s a group of countries that help each other) and other nearby nations to figure out what happened. The Latvian navy even sent a patrol boat to check things out!
Sweden’s Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, promised to help with the investigation too.
This isn’t the first time there’s been trouble with undersea cables in the Baltic Sea lately. It’s a big deal because these cables help keep our internet running smoothly! π
But don’t worry, the internet services are being routed through other ways for now, so people can still stay connected. Let’s hope they solve this underwater mystery soon! π
