On Wednesday, investigators went to the presidential residence (that’s like the White House in the U.S.) to arrest President Yoon. They even had to use ladders to get past some buses blocking the way!
They were met by the President’s supporters, members of his political party called the People Power Party, and his lawyers. It was a tense standoff that lasted over two hours! ⏱️
The police warned that anyone who tried to stop them could also be arrested. 😬
The acting President, Choi Sang-mok, announced, \”The execution of the presidential arrest warrant has begun.\”
But President Yoon’s lawyer said they were trying to arrange for him to come voluntarily to avoid any more trouble.
This isn’t the first time they’ve tried to arrest him. Earlier this month, they had to stop after a six-hour standoff.
Why are they trying to arrest the President? Well, President Yoon was impeached by the National Assembly (that’s like their Congress) last month. That means they voted to remove him from office because they believe he did something wrong.
He’s accused of being part of an insurrection, which is like leading a rebellion. He even declared martial law on December 3rd! 😲
Martial law is when the military takes over control of the country to keep order.
But the National Assembly canceled his martial law order a few hours later.
