On Tuesday, during a big meeting where reporters ask questions (called a press briefing), Mr. Lavrov said that Russia wants to discuss ‘security guarantees’ for Ukraine. That means they want to make sure everyone feels safe and secure.
He also mentioned that it’s important to agree on bigger security issues to end the ongoing conflict (that’s the fighting happening right now).
Mr. Lavrov said that getting rid of threats on Russia’s western borders is very important. He believes this is one of the main reasons for the conflict.
He also talked about the new U.S. President, Donald Trump. Mr. Lavrov said that when Mr. Trump takes office, Russia will see what his plans are for Ukraine.
Russia is happy that the new U.S. administration is focusing more on what’s really happening in Ukraine. They hope this will help bring peace.
Mr. Lavrov also said that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to meet with Mr. Trump! But so far, there haven’t been any official plans.
