Cholera Outbreak in Sudan: What You Need to Know

What is Cholera?
Cholera is an illness that can make people very sick with bad tummy aches and lots of diarrhea. It’s caused by germs in dirty water or food. If people don’t get clean water to drink or wash their hands properly, they can catch it.
What’s Happening in Sudan?
Since July, over 91,000 people in Sudan have gotten sick with cholera, and sadly, more than 2,300 people have died. That’s a lot of people! Many areas, especially places called Tawila in North Darfur State and Bileil in South Darfur State, have been hit really hard.
Why is This Happening?
Sudan has been facing lots of problems lately. There’s been fighting, floods, and many people have had to leave their homes. All of this makes it harder to keep things clean and to get good healthcare.
How Does This Affect Kids?
Many kids in Sudan are getting sick or can’t go to school. Hospitals are closing because they can’t stay open during the fighting. It’s a tough time for families there.
