NASA Astronauts Talk About Fixing a Space Mission Together ๐
Hey space fans! ๐ Have you ever had something not go as planned, like a school project or a game? That’s what happened to NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams during a space mission!
Butch and Suni were supposed to take a short trip on a spacecraft called Starliner. It’s built by Boeing, a company that makes airplanes and spaceships. But instead of an 8-day mission, they ended up spending 9 months at the International Space Station (ISS)! ๐ฒ
Why? Well, Starliner had some problems. Some thrusters didn’t work, and there were helium leaks. That meant it wasn’t safe for Butch and Suni to come back to Earth on it. So, they had to stay longer on the ISS until they could safely return.
At a press conference, Butch said, “We all are responsible. We all own this.” He means that everyone, including himself, NASA, and Boeing, shares the responsibility for the mission’s problems.
But don’t worry! Butch and Suni are super positive. They believe that by working together, they can fix the issues. “We’re going to make it work,” Butch said. Suni added that they’re “all in” to make Starliner a success.
After 286 days in space, they finally returned home on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spaceship. ๐ Now, they’re ready to help improve Starliner so future astronauts can use it safely.
Back on Earth, Suni was overjoyed to see her Labrador retrievers again. ๐ถ “It’s great being back home,” she said. Butch joked that his wife wants him to help with yard work! ๐ณ
NASA plans to test Starliner’s engines this summer. Even though there were challenges, Butch and Suni are excited to keep exploring space and making things better for everyone.
Isn’t it inspiring how they handle problems together? Maybe next time you face a challenge, you can remember Butch and Suni’s teamwork and never-give-up attitude! ๐
