What’s Going On?
At a big event called the Zhongguancun Forum, scientists and tech experts from China showed off their latest cool inventions in brain-computer interface technology, or BCI for short. But wait, what’s BCI?
What is BCI? 🤔
BCI stands for Brain-Computer Interface. It’s a special technology that connects our brains directly to computers or machines. This means that people can control devices just by using their thoughts! How awesome is that?
Helping People with Special Needs
Scientists in China have been working hard to help people who have trouble moving or communicating. For example:
- At one hospital, they helped a stroke patient move a robotic arm just by thinking. This helped the patient in their rehabilitation (that’s a big word for recovery and getting better).
- Another patient who couldn’t speak was able to communicate by thinking of Chinese characters, using a special device with lots of tiny sensors.
- A person who couldn’t move their arms or legs was able to control a robotic arm to grab things, which is a huge step in helping people with spinal injuries.
Walking Again with a “Neural Bridge” 🌉
At another exciting event, a team from Fudan University showed how they helped four people who couldn’t walk regain movement in their legs! How did they do it?
They created something called a “neural bridge” between the brain and the spine. Think of it like a new pathway for signals to travel, allowing the brain to tell the legs to move again. Some of these patients even started trying to stand up just 10 days after the surgery!
