Have you ever imagined controlling a robot or a computer just with your thoughts? 🤖💭 Well, this is becoming a reality! China has set new guidelines for brain-computer interface (BCI) technologies, bringing us one step closer to a sci-fi future.
So, what is BCI? It’s a technology that allows our brains to talk directly to machines! It does this by using tiny devices called electrodes that can pick up signals from our brains.
There are two types of BCI:
- Invasive BCI: This involves placing electrodes inside the brain. It can get very clear signals but is more complicated.
- Non-invasive BCI: This uses sensors placed on the head, without any surgery. It’s easier but might not pick up signals as clearly.
Chinese scientists have developed a special semi-invasive device called Neural Electronic Opportunity (NEO). Created by a team from Tsinghua University led by Professor Hong Bo, NEO sits between the skull and a protective layer of the brain called the dura mater. This way, it avoids touching the brain directly but still gets good signals! 🛰️
Guess what? Three patients have already tried this new device! One of them was able to move his hand again with the help of a special glove filled with air. 🖐️🎈 How cool is that?
By 2025, the team hopes to help 30 to 50 more people. They’re also working on making the device even smaller—about the size of a coin! 🪙 This new version will use lighter materials and advanced chip technology to work even better.
This amazing progress shows how technology can help people in incredible ways. Who knows? Maybe one day you’ll be able to control your video games with just your mind! 🎮🧠
