Hey there, space and math fans! ๐๐งฎ
Guess what? An asteroid has just been named after an ancient Chinese mathematician named Liu Hui! Isn’t that cool?
Liu Hui lived a very long time ago, during the Wei and Jin dynasties in China (that’s from the year 220 to 420). He was super smart and made big contributions to mathematics in China and the world!
The asteroid, which is coded 361712, was discovered by scientists at the Purple Mountain Observatory, part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The International Astronomical Union, which is the group that names things in space, approved naming this asteroid after Liu Hui.
They even had a special ceremony at the China Science and Technology Museum to announce it!
Why is Liu Hui so important? Well, he was one of the main founders of China’s classical mathematical theory. That means he helped build the foundation for math in China, which is a big deal!
So next time you look up at the stars, remember that somewhere out there, there’s an asteroid named after a brilliant mathematician who lived over 1,700 years ago! ๐
