🏁 George Russell Takes the Win! 🏆
In an exciting race at the Canadian Grand Prix, George Russell claimed his first victory of the Formula 1 season! The Mercedes driver held off last year’s winner, Max Verstappen, to stand on the top step of the podium. How cool is that? 😄
“It’s amazing to be back on the top step,” Russell said with a big smile. “I felt last year was a victory lost, so to get the victory and see my teammate Kimi on the podium, too, is an amazing day for the team.”
A Race Full of Thrills!
The race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve was anything but boring. Russell started on pole position for the second year in a row and led most of the race. Verstappen, a four-time champion, tried his best to catch up but had to settle for second place. “That was the maximum we could have achieved today,” Verstappen said.
First Podium for Rookie Kimi Antonelli 🎉
Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli finished third, earning his first-ever Formula 1 podium! Way to go, Kimi! “He didn’t crack under pressure, even with the McLaren right behind him,” said Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff.
McLaren Teammates Collide 😲
The excitement peaked when McLaren teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris battled wheel-to-wheel on lap 67 out of 70. Things got intense when Norris accidentally bumped into Piastri and hit the wall! This brought out the safety car for the final laps.
Norris received a five-second penalty and later said he was sorry. Piastri finished fourth, ending his streak of eight podium finishes in a row.
Championship Standings Update 📊
Piastri still leads the championship, extending his advantage over Norris to 22 points. Verstappen is third, only 21 points behind Norris. The season is heating up!
