Hey tennis fans! 🎾
Guess what? Carlos Alcaraz, the defending champion, just battled his way into the French Open quarterfinals! On Sunday, the young Spanish star faced off against Ben Shelton from the USA in an epic match.
The match was full of exciting moments: super-fast serves, powerful shots, and clever drop shots that kept everyone on the edge of their seats. It lasted over three hours!
After winning the first set in a tight tiebreaker, Alcaraz took the second set by breaking Shelton’s serve just once. But Shelton didn’t give up! He fought back in the third set, winning it with two breaks of serve. 🎉
In the end, Alcaraz regained control and won the fourth set, sealing the match as the sun was setting over the court.
Alcaraz said after the match, “I think we both have huge respect for each other, and we entertained the people well. He’s a really powerful player; he can make any shot… I appreciate the moment that I’ve shared with him today.”
Now, Alcaraz will face another American in the quarterfinals: Tommy Paul. Paul won his match against Alexei Popyrin from Australia in straight sets.
In other exciting matches, Lorenzo Musetti from Italy reached the quarterfinals for the first time! He beat Holger Rune from Denmark in four sets. Musetti will play Frances Tiafoe from the USA next. Tiafoe made it to the quarterfinals by defeating Daniel Altmaier from Germany.
This is a big moment for American men’s tennis! For the first time since 1996, two American men have reached the quarterfinals at the French Open. Back then, it was tennis legends Jim Courier and Pete Sampras. No American man had made it this far at Roland-Garros since Andre Agassi did in 2003. 🇺🇸
Stay tuned for more exciting matches at the French Open! Who are you cheering for?
