Hey tennis fans! Have you heard the big news? 🇨🇦 Canada’s own Gabriel Diallo pulled off an incredible upset at the Madrid Open! He defeated Grigor Dimitrov from Bulgaria to reach his very first ATP Masters quarterfinal! 🎉
Dimitrov, who was one of the tournament favorites, won the first set 7-5. But Diallo didn’t give up! 💪 Just like he did in a previous match against Zhang Zhizhen of China, he saved not one, not two, but three match points! 😮
In an exciting tiebreaker, Diallo served an ace to win the second set 7-6 (9-7). The crowd went wild! 🙌 Then, in the final set, he kept his cool and won 6-4 when Dimitrov hit the ball wide. Game, set, match! 🏆
This victory means Diallo, who is just 23 years old, will jump up 25 spots to reach a career-high ranking of World No. 53! 🎊 And guess what? If he beats Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti in the next round, he could climb even higher!
Speaking of Musetti, he’s been doing great too. 🎾 He secured his place in the Top 10 players in the world for the first time after beating Australia’s Alex de Minaur. Musetti, also 23, won the match with scores of 6-4 and 6-2.
Isn’t it exciting to see these young players making big moves on the tennis court? Who are you cheering for? Let us know! 😊
