More Sports, More Medals π
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) just announced that there will be 22 more medal events at LA28 compared to the previous Olympics in Paris 2024. That’s a total of 351 medal events! More chances for athletes to shine and for us to watch amazing competitions!
New Sports to Watch πβΎππ
Five new sports are joining the Olympic family: baseball/softball, cricket, flag football, lacrosse, and squash. These sports will add 698 new athlete spots, bringing even more variety to the Games. Have you ever watched cricket or squash? Now’s your chance to learn about them!
Girls and Boys, Together at the Games π§π¦
For the first time in Olympic history, all team sports will have at least the same number of women’s teams as men’s teams! That’s rightβequal teams for everyone! Gender equality was a big deal in planning the Games. There will be about 5,333 female athletes and 5,167 male athletes, making it one of the most balanced Olympics ever.
Mixed Events and New Competitions πΉπββοΈπ€ΈββοΈ
LA28 is also adding more mixed events, where boys and girls compete together on the same team! You’ll see mixed events in sports like archery, athletics (that’s track and field), golf, gymnastics, rowing, and table tennis. How cool is that?
In swimming, there will now be men’s and women’s competitions for the 50m backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke. That’s more races and more fun!
New Beginnings in Some Sports π£ββοΈππ§ββοΈ
Rowing will introduce women’s solo (called CW1x), men’s solo (CM1x), and mixed double sculls (CX2x) in the coastal beach sprint. Sounds exciting, doesn’t it?
In basketball 3×3, the number of teams is increasing from 8 to 12 for both boys and girls. That means more games and more slam dunks! π
For those who love climbing, sport climbing will now have separate medal events for bouldering and lead climbing. Get ready to see some amazing athletes reach new heights! π§ββοΈ
Even More Updates π
Lots of sports wanted to make changes for LA28. The IOC said that 24 out of 31 Olympic sports federations asked to add or change events, requesting a total of 46 new events. While not all requests were accepted, many new and exciting events have been added, making this Olympics one of the biggest yet!
Oh, and guess what? Boxing will be included in LA28, too! π₯
