Hey tennis fans! ๐พ Have you heard the big news? Novak Djokovic, one of the greatest tennis players in the world, just broke another record!
On Sunday, Djokovic won his match against Camilo Ugo Carabelli from Argentina at the Miami Open. He won with scores of 6-1, 7-6(1). This victory wasn’t just any winโit moved him ahead of Rafael Nadal in the all-time list of Masters 1000 match wins!
Masters 1000 tournaments are some of the toughest and most important events in tennis, just after the Grand Slams. Before the Miami Open started, Djokovic had 409 Masters 1000 wins, just one behind Nadal. With his two wins in Florida, he’s now the record holder!
Djokovic said, “I’m honored to have another milestone, another record broken. There’s always something on the line pretty much every time I play, and of course that motivates me to do well at tournaments.”
Can you believe it’s been nearly 20 years since Djokovic’s first Masters 1000 win? Back in 2005, he defeated Victor Hanescu in Paris. Now, he’s also aiming for his seventh Miami Open title! Next up, he’ll face Lorenzo Musetti from Italy.
But that’s not all! On the women’s side, Iga Swiatek from Poland is making waves too. She won her match against Elise Mertens of Belgium with scores of 7-6(2), 6-1. This means she’s the first player to reach the last 16 of a Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) 1000 event 25 times in a row!
Swiatek said, “I’m happy that I got my level up in the tiebreaker to close it in two sets. Overall, I’m happy with the performance and how I worked through some issues.”
She’ll be playing against Elina Svitolina from Ukraine next, who won her match against Karolina Muchova from the Czech Republic.
It’s an exciting time in the tennis world! Who are you cheering for? ๐พ๐
