Hey there! Have you ever had a friend you sometimes disagree with but still need to work with on school projects? Well, that’s kind of what’s happening between China and the United States right now!

On Friday, China’s Commerce Minister, Wang Wentao, said that trying to “decouple” or “break up” the economic and trade relationships between China and the U.S. is not a good idea and is bound to fail.

Over the years, China and the U.S., being the world’s two largest economies, have had their ups and downs—just like friends who sometimes argue. But they remain important partners to each other. Despite some challenges, the trade between them has stayed pretty stable.

In fact, from 2017 to 2024, the trade of goods and services between China and the U.S. grew by 18% and 34.7%! That’s like having more and more ideas to share over time.

Minister Wang believes that working together brings “win-win” results, meaning both sides benefit. He said that cooperation is the only right path forward. By trading and investing in each other’s countries, they create lots of jobs and opportunities—kind of like how teamwork on a group project can lead to better results for everyone.

He also mentioned that China is ready to talk more with the U.S., find common ground, and reduce misunderstandings. It’s like when you sit down with a friend to sort things out and decide to work together again.

Both countries have a big responsibility to help the global economy grow and be stable. When they work together, it not only helps them but the whole world too!

So, just like it’s better to make up with friends and work as a team, China and the U.S. are better off cooperating rather than “breaking up.”
