On Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump held a big military parade in Washington, D.C. Tanks rolled by, planes flew overhead, and soldiers marched proudly. The parade celebrated the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army and also happened to be on President Trump’s 79th birthday.
But while the parade was happening, thousands of people were protesting in cities all over the country! They were part of the “No Kings” demonstrations. These protesters believe that no one person should have too much power, like a king.
In cities like New York, Los Angeles, Houston, Atlanta, and Washington, many people came out to make their voices heard. In Los Angeles, people protested against President Trump’s decision to send troops into their city after clashes that started because of immigration raids.
The organizers of the “No Kings” protests expected millions to join in 1,500 cities across the U.S. While the White House said the protests didn’t have many people, photos from different cities showed big crowds gathering.
Sadly, during this time, a terrible event happened in Minnesota. A former state speaker named Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed. Another state lawmaker and his wife were also hurt by gunshots. President Trump quickly spoke out against these attacks.
This weekend showed that there are strong feelings and divisions in the United States. While some people celebrated with the parade, others were out protesting, showing that they want things to change.
