Remembering George Floyd: Five Years Later

Five years ago, a man named George Floyd changed the world. On May 25, 2020, he lost his life during an arrest in Minneapolis, and his story made people everywhere start talking about fairness and equality.

People all around the United States and even in other countries came together to say, “Black Lives Matter.” They wanted to make sure that everyone is treated equally, no matter what they look like.

This weekend, people visited George Floyd Square in Minneapolis, the place where George took his last breath. They saw colorful murals that say, “You Changed the World, George.” Some cried, some left flowers or teddy bears, and many remembered why they started standing up for justice.

Even though some feel that not enough has changed, many believe it’s important to keep trying. Jamie, who is 30 years old, visited the square. She said it’s important to show that George’s story isn’t just a “moment in time.” “Even though it’s hard, we have to keep going,” she said.

George’s aunt, Ms. Harrelson, helped with the memorial events. The theme this year is “The People Have Spoken.” It’s a message of hope and determination to keep pushing for what’s right.

Even after five years, George Floyd’s memory continues to inspire people to stand up against injustice and make the world a kinder place. Let’s remember him by treating others with kindness and standing up for fairness.
