Edan is both Israeli and American, and he’s been taken hostage by a group called Hamas. A hostage is someone who is taken and held against their will.
Israel says they haven’t agreed to stop the fighting, called a ceasefire, or to release any prisoners. Their main goal right now is to bring Edan home safely.
Netanyahu’s office said, “We are in the midst of critical days in which Hamas has been presented with a deal that would enable the release of our hostages. The negotiations will continue under fire, during preparations for an intensification of the fighting.” This means they’re still talking to Hamas to try to make a deal, even while the conflict continues.
