Hey everyone! Did you hear about the big earthquake in Myanmar? On March 28th, a strong earthquake shook the country, causing a lot of damage and making many people sad and scared.
The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, Mr. Antonio Guterres, is asking the world to help out. He said, “Myanmar today is the scene of utter devastation and desperation.” That means things are really tough there right now.
More than 3,100 people have died, over 4,500 are injured, and hundreds are missing. That’s a lot of people who need help!
Even before the earthquake, Myanmar was going through hard times. Now, with the monsoon (rainy) season coming soon, things might get even harder.
Mr. Guterres is asking countries around the world to send money and help. He wants rescue workers and helpers to be able to get into Myanmar easily, so they can bring food, medicine, and other important things.
He was glad to hear that Myanmar’s authorities have said there will be temporary ceasefires. That means fighting will stop for a while, so helpers can get to the people who need them.
The UN is sending special people, like Mr. Tom Fletcher and Ms. Julie Bishop, to Myanmar to help with peace and bring support.
Mr. Guterres said, “The United Nations will keep pushing for peace and life-saving support for the people of Myanmar in their hour of need.”
Let’s hope that the people of Myanmar get the help they need soon! π
