Hey friends! Did you hear about what’s happening in the United States? The government has stopped a program that was helping almost 26,000 immigrant children. These are kids who came to the U.S. from other countries without their parents. Some of them are so young they can’t even read yet! π
Before, these kids had lawyers to help them understand big, complicated things like court and legal papers. But now, the program that gave them these lawyers has been stopped by the government. π
No one is exactly sure why the program was stopped. The organization running it, called the Acacia Center for Justice, was told to “stop work”, but the reasons weren’t clear.
Without lawyers, these children might have to go to court all by themselves! π’ Imagine being in a new country, not speaking the language well, and having to understand confusing laws without any help. That’s really tough!
People who help these kids are worried. Jennifer Podkul, who fights for these children’s rights, said that only about half of them have legal help in court. Without lawyers, some kids might get stuck in the system or not know what to do.
Melissa Lopez, who works for a group that helps these children, said they will keep doing what’s best for the kids. She wants to make sure they know their rights and aren’t left alone.
It’s so important for all kids to have someone to look out for them, especially when they’re far from home and feeling scared or alone. Let’s hope these children get the help they need! β€οΈ
