Croatian presidential election heads to runoff

Croatia’s Presidential Election Heads to Exciting Runoff! 🇭🇷

Hey there, future voters! 🇭🇷

Guess what? Croatia is about to have an exciting presidential runoff election on January 12th! 🎉

In the first round of voting, no candidate got more than half of the votes. That means the top two candidates will face off again to see who will become the next president of Croatia. Let’s meet them!

Meet the Candidates:

  1. Zoran Milanović: He’s the current president and was almost re-elected in the first round with 49.10% of the votes! So close! Milanović is supported by the Social Democratic Party, one of the big political parties in Croatia.
  2. Dragan Primorac: A 59-year-old doctor and scientist who decided to return to politics after 15 years. He got 19.35% of the votes in the first round. Primorac is known for promoting family values and patriotism. He wants to bring people together.

What’s a Runoff Election?

Since no one got over 50% of the votes, Croatian law says the top two candidates have to compete again. This gives them another chance to win the support of the people.

Why is This Important?

The president of Croatia serves for five years and can be re-elected once. This election is a big deal because Croatia, a member of the European Union and NATO, is facing some challenges like high inflation (which means prices are going up) and not enough workers.

Both candidates are hopeful and excited:

  • Milanović said, “I believe that in two weeks we will celebrate victory!”
  • Primorac called the runoff “a great opportunity” and said, “Croatia needs changes, and in two weeks it will be a historic day.”

Stay Tuned!

We’ll have to wait and see who will win on January 12th. It’s an exciting time for Croatia, and every vote counts! 🗳️

What do you think? Who would you choose if you could vote? 🤔
